When C of I biology and art double major Quin McLaughlin’s name was called as the 1st Place winner for poster presentation in the Marine and Aquatic Biology category at the 43rd Annual West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference earlier this month, she was so surprised by the recognition that she lost her shoes en route to accepting her award.
“I was just so shocked and excited that I had won,” McLaughlin said. “That day, I was just glad that people who saw my poster were excited about my research. It was nice seeing that excitement from other people, and I’m glad people think it’s as cool as I do.”
Twelve College of Idaho graduating senior environmental studies students will present their respective theses starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28 in the Cruzen-Murray Library Presentation Room, each of them exploring the topic of local soil health through multiple lenses.
As the 2018 Spring Semester draws closer to its conclusion, it’s time for The College of Idaho’s students to once again present what they’ve learned at this year’s 13th Annual Student Research Conference, taking place beginning at noon on Saturday, April 28 at several locations across the C of I’s campus.
During their spring break, The College of Idaho’s Model United Nations team once again found itself as one of the smallest delegations attending the 2018 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 18-22. Just like the country the C of I team was representing at the conference, the Southeast Asian island state of Timor-Leste, the College found itself dwarfed by comparatively larger colleges and universities, from fellow Americans to international attendees from places like Germany, Italy and France.
Despite their small size, the C of I team proved itself to be a positive force at the conference, earning the Distinguished Delegation award — the second-highest honor possible at the world’s largest Model UN conference, which hosts over 2,000 delegates from 165 colleges and universities worldwide to simulate the goals and procedures of the real life United Nations.
This summer, a group of student researchers and faculty members from The College of Idaho will embark on a three-week trip to the Thailand-Myanmar border to document the experiences of Dara’ang refugees in the area — a trip financed by a competitive $35,000 ASIANetwork-Freeman Student-Faculty Fellows Grant.
In 1967, a group of students gathered to form a line across The College of Idaho campus, stretching from what is now Strahorn Hall all the way to the N.L. Terteling Library, passing books one by one to what was then the College’s newest library.
Fifty-one years after that historic event, the College will once again gather to recreate that historic scene. At 5 p.m. on Feb. 15, the College’s Alumni Relations team will hold a new “Book Brigade” event to officially complete the transfer of library books from the Terteling Library to the recently opened Cruzen-Murray Library, which opened its doors on Jan. 31 after almost two years of construction.
Alcoser will add playwright to his list of accomplishments at this February’s Region VII conference of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival between Feb. 19-23. Alcoser’s ten-minute play, “h/ECHO/kes” (pronounced as “he chokes”), has been named a regional semifinalist for the KCACTF National Playwriting Program — the first C of I student in the program’s history to have their play performed at the regional conference.
The College of Idaho’s Carter-Chalker Lectureship on Faith and Contemporary Issues will host prominent sociologist and interfaith leader, Dr. Eboo Patel, for a Feb. 21st campus visit and public lecture. Patel’s stay will include class visits, conversations with faculty and Student Life, and the free public lecture “Acts of Faith: Bridging Interfaith Barriers,” which is set for 7 p.m. in the Langroise Center for Performing and Fine Arts on the C of I campus in Caldwell.
College of Idaho senior psychology major Sage Vincent once practiced rugby in the field next to Hayman Hall as a freshman. That same field is now home to the Cruzen-Murray Library, the College’s newest 58,620 square-foot addition to the campus.
Vincent was among the first students to enter the library after its official opening on Jan. 31, the first day of the College’s 2018 Spring Term. He walked up the stairs to the top floor of the new building, taking a seat at one of the many tables around the bookshelves and gazing beyond his laptop to the view of campus through the wide, all-encompassing windows surrounding the library itself.
Within The College of Idaho’s winter term, certain classes offer students the opportunity to investigate the formation of the universe, backtrack the issues and strategies of 2016’s presidential election, and allow students to investigate the influence of music in movies and videogames. Winter term is known for its unique classroom settings, which EDU-300 embraced through regular off-campus trips and activities.
